The Yorkshire Coast Gears up for TDY

Communities plan to “Dress to impress” for the Tour de Yorkshire. The paint brushes are out, sewing bees are busy in a hive of workshops and bunting is being strung, ready to embellish the coast in a rainbow of yellow and blue.

IMG 0742The whole of the Yorkshire Coast is gearing up to adorn their region for the Tour de Yorkshire. A large scale community participation artwork, featuring a gigantic cycling jersey design, which will be entered into the official 2017 Tour de Yorkshire land art competition, is underway in Scarborough.

The Gigantic Jersey, which will be 17 meters wide, approximately the length of an articulated truck, and soar 12 meters high, will be put together by local residents at community sewing bees.  It will be touring schools, public and community venues to encourage local residents and visitors to contribute through words and images to the final look of the piece.

This imaginative design when complete will adorn the hillside overlooking the stage 1 finish, along Scarborough’s scenic Marine Drive.

A 3D Map is also being constructed that will bring the route to life.  Creative Day Care, a service for adults with disabilities based at The Street in Scarborough wanted to create a showcase for the event.  Many hands are busy building a wind and weatherproof design from embroidery, fabrics, wool, pom pom sheep, twigs and bicycles. The impressive structure will then have a grand unveiling and put on view to the public.

While shops and business are busy adorning their frontage with garlands of bunting Yorkshire Coast College is also busy creating a one-off chocolate trophy!  Scarborough TEC, (Training, Education and Careers) Catering and Hospitality Students, with the help from former Scarborough Technical College student and Master Chocolatier Andrew Thwaite are creating a chocolate version of the trophy to present to the winner .

Sponsored by Callebaut the world’s largest fine chocolate manufacturer, the first stage of this unique mouth-watering sculpture has started, crafted by engineering students using a real bike as a chocolate mould.  Catering and Hospitality Students are then going to take on the second stage meticulously recreating the trophy to produce a chocolate masterpiece.

Hoteliers are opening their doors to two feet and two wheels the weekend of the Tour de Yorkshire. The Holistic Health Hotel, Fountains Court, is offering a free 20 minute leg massage to guests who bring their bikes with them on their stay.  With room space at a premium that weekend call Discover Yorkshire Coast Tourism Bureau on 01723 383636, a dedicated team of advisors can find you accommodation or browse yourself on discoveryorkshirecoast.com, whether you want a room in the middle of the action or a sedate scenic sea view, the area has something for all.
