Tour Maker Roles Overview  

Route Marshals:

  • Spectator Engagement

This role involves volunteers being based together in small groups at key points along the route. It requires you to act as the face of the race, welcoming and offering advice and support to spectators, whilst making sure the crowds do not cause a risk to the riders or the event. Duties may also include supporting the Tour de Yorkshire team with activation and distributing giveaways. 

  • Flag & Whistle Marshals

This role ensures the safety of the riders by using a flag and whistle to physically indicate hazards and structures causing a risk to the riders, including road islands and street furniture.

  • Supervisors & Deputy Supervisors

This role involves being responsible for a group within a specific area, ensuring they are spread evenly across their allocated area and have all the local information they need. Deputy Supervisors act as second in command to the supervisor of an area.

New roles for 2020 (Please note availability for these roles is extremely limited):

  • Accreditation

This role will be to provide a friendly face to all those visiting the accreditation centre and supply them with the correct accreditation that they will need. You will be there to check-in and direct people to the correct areas. (Locations: start and finish towns). 

  • Media Centre Operations

This role involves assisting with the operations of the media centre and providing a friendly face to journalists visiting the centre. You’ll also be the Media Centre Manager’s first port of call for any ad hoc requests that may come from the hundreds of national and international journalists who will be based there. (Locations: Finish towns). 

  • Activation Protocol

This role will involve being part of the pre-race ceremonies team to help deliver and assist with start activation. Providing a friendly welcome to spectators in the start towns of the race, duties will involve getting the crowds geared up and excited, distributing hand waving flags before the race starts, ensuring dignitaries are in place for their roles, and assisting with the car sponsor activations on Stage 1 of both races. You’ll also be required to assist your Tour de Yorkshire lead with any other requests as and when through the pre-stage activations. (Location: start towns)

  • Podium Protocol

This role will involve being part of the post-race ceremonies team and helping to deliver and assist with management of the podium medal ceremony. (Locations: Finish towns)

  • Drivers – Final Caravan Vehicle

This role will involve driving the end of caravan parade vehicle, assisting the Caravan Manager during stops and communicating throughout the route as to when the end of the parade has cleared bridges, left stops etc, and to identify any problems towards the end of the parade. (Location: Covering the whole stage route).

  • Filming support

This role will involve supporting the Tour de Yorkshire Communications Executive with filming tasks and general assistance to their team (Location: various locations across the route).

Anti-Doping Chaperones

This role will be responsible for escorting riders’ post-race for their doping tests. You will ensure each rider is escorted safely, and in a timely fashion before their race presentations and returning to their teams. You will be expected to be professional and polite during your shifts when working with the riders. (Locations: Finish towns).

  • Team Meet and Greet

This role will require you to be based at the team hotels on Wednesday 29th & Thursday 30th April, to be the first friendly face our riders see as they arrive. You will support them in checking in their team and answering any queries they may have.(Location: various locations across Yorkshire)

  • Moto Film Crew Drivers

This role involves chaperoning the motorcycle TV crew who film the race throughout the event. It may involve driving a van or people carrier to take the crew from the airport to their hotel and transport them between locations throughout the event. You would need to be available to work from the Wednesday 29th April to Monday 4th May. (Location: Covering the whole stage route).
