Beryl Burton tribute cycling jersey

Beryl Burton tribute cycling jersey launched for Maserati Tour de Yorkshire Ride

Thousands of amateur riders will pay homage to Yorkshire’s greatest ever cyclist

On 6 May 2018, 5,000 amateur cyclists will take to the roads surrounding Leeds as part of the Maserati Tour de Yorkshire Ride, just hours before the professionals complete the final day of the Tour de Yorkshire. This year, event organisers Human Race and Welcome to Yorkshire have created a very special commemorative jersey for participants and cycling fans, which tells the story of Yorkshire cycling legend, Beryl Burton OBE.

Born in 1937 in Leeds, Beryl’s remarkable cycling career spanned three decades as she dominated women’s road and track racing in the UK in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Winning more than 90 domestic championships and seven world titles, one of Beryl’s crowning achievements was setting the women's record for the 12-hour time-trial, which exceeded the men's record for two years.

Beryl’s daughter Denise Burton-Cole, a formidable cyclist in her own right, has offered input into the jersey design. The jersey includes a small stripe detail as a nod to Beryl’s reign in British cycling, Beryl’s initials (BB), and on the inside pocket; a list of all of Beryl’s world record titles and how long they stood for.

Denise Burton-Cole says; “My mother would be amazed and pleased by the growth of cycling in Yorkshire. Back when my mother was most active in cycling there were far fewer women riding and competing. She would have been delighted to see more women out there now, especially getting on their bikes and taking part in this very special event.”

Sir Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, says; “Cycling has a rich heritage in Yorkshire and Beryl Burton is arguably the most successful cyclist we have ever seen. This jersey is part of Beryl’s legacy and we hope it will encourage more people to get involved and ride in our beautiful county.”

Nick Rusling, CEO of Human Race, says; “This is the first time that an event jersey has been dedicated to a rider from history, and we are delighted to be able to tell Beryl’s story as part of this fantastic event.”

£1 from every jersey sold will go towards Maggie’s, the cancer support charity who will open their doors to a centre in Leeds in 2018. The new centre will provide vital support for individuals and families living with cancer, from across Yorkshire.

The jersey, which is available for pre-order online now, will be available to collect on the day of the Maserati Tour de Yorkshire Ride (6 May), from the event start at Woodhouse Moor.
